IP65 vs IP68 LED Lights: Waterproof Rating Guide
Choosing the right waterproof rating affects product lifespan, safety, and project cost. Here is what each rating means.
Understanding IP Ratings
The IP (Ingress Protection) rating has two digits. First digit = solid particle protection. Second digit = liquid protection.
IP65: Protected Against Water Jets
Suitable for: Covered outdoor areas, under eaves, semi-outdoor use. Can withstand rain and water jets from any direction.
Not suitable for: Submersion, heavy snow accumulation, pool-side installation.
IP68: Fully Submersible
Suitable for: Pool installations, fountains, underwater displays, areas prone to flooding.
Capabilities: Can be submerged up to 1.5 meters for 30 minutes without damage. Some IP68+ products rated for deeper submersion.
Recommendation
For standard outdoor use (street decorations, building facades), IP65 is sufficient. For water features and flood-prone areas, choose IP68.
HWLight offers both IP65 and IP68 LED products with independent test reports for every product line.
