IP65 vs IP44: Understanding Waterproof Ratings

Waterproof rating is the most important specification for outdoor LED lights.

What Does IP Rating Mean?

IP equals Ingress Protection. Two digits: first for solid protection, second for liquid protection.

IP44 Explained

• First 4: Protected against solid objects over 1mm
• Second 4: Protected against water splashes from any direction
• Suitable for: Covered outdoor areas, indoor use

IP65 Explained

• First 6: Dust-tight
• Second 5: Protected against water jets from any direction
• Suitable for: Permanent outdoor installation

Which Do You Need?

For any outdoor LED light that will be exposed to rain and snow, IP65 minimum is required. IP44 is only suitable for covered or indoor areas.
